Guwahati: Former general secretary of the Nagaon college student union and AASU leader, Kirti Kamal Bora was allegedly shot at by the anti-narcotics squad of Nagaon police on Saturday evening.
According to reports, Bora said that he went to medicines shop to get some medicines for his mother. While, he was on the way to his home, he found some police personnel allegedly beating a man nearby his locality.
''When I intervene and asked the police official reason for beating the person, the police personnel threatened me and abused me verbally. As soon as I reacted to their comments, they dragged me and started beating me with stick. After this, they shot me in the leg,'' he added.
Bora further claimed that he was innocent and he didn't even abuse the police.
The family members of Bora, however, blamed police personnel for shooting him for no valid reason.
Meanwhile, he is admitted at the Nagaon Civil Hospital.
Later, reacting over the incident, the district Police Superintendent of police Anand Mishra claimed that when the police stopped Bora, he allegedly attacked them following which police retaliated and shot him on his leg.
Mishra further stated that another person was also held along with Bora.
''Initial investigation showed revealed that one of our police personnel was attacked by the Bora after which the police retaliated back. Later, he was shot in the leg to avoid a fatal injury,'' he added.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered a probe into the incident which will be led by Additional Chief Secretary Pawan Borthakur.
He said that the investigation report will have to be submitted within seven days.
''Strong action will also be taken against police officers who are at fault," he added.
